Gone are the days when women were confined to the boundaries of the home and household chores. Women are now leading professionals, CEO’s, MD’s and engineers just to name a few. They are continually breaking boundaries and challenging stereotypes in society.
One such woman is Dr Nandipha Sekeleni. She is the epitome of an all-rounder who inspires young women to reach further and tap into their endless capabilities.
When she’s not in scrubs and trainers, you can find Dr Sekeleni draped in fine clothing and shoes to die for. Her social media feeds exude style and class, she is indeed a trendsetter among her peers.
Taken from her blog, yes she blogs as well, The Prescribed Lifestyle, this is what Dr Sekeleni had to say about herself:
“Nandipha Sekeleni is a small town girl with big city dreams. Born in a small village called Bizana and raised in the holiday town named Port Edward. Her love for the ocean originates from growing up by the sea.
She has always loved fashion but medicine more and that is why she obtained a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Biomedical Sciences and furthered her studies and entered the GEMP programme and obtained another degree MBBCh from the University of the Witwatersrand.
She simply and openly adores her family unit, she is a devoted wife and loving mother of two.
Her blogging career started many years ago when she co-owned a blog named September34.tumblr.com, currently, she is popularly known as Nanzyee on many social media links. She has had the opportunity to travel and explore many wonderful parts of the world and enjoys sharing her experiences.
This is a lifestyle blog that covers mainly her inter interests, fashion, travel, photography, food, books, beauty, parenthood, the victories and losses of a modern day female professional. This blog aspires to motivate, and embrace ourselves the way we are.”

We could end this post right here but much more can be said about this powerhouse of a woman. Dr Sekeleni, Nanzyee to all her avid followers, is the true definition of a woman who is breaking borders. Many would associate the love for medicine and science with a dull work-consumed and mundane life. Others may even go as far as stereotyping doctors as unstylish, uncreative or generally lacking right brain thinking. Speaking of breaking borders, in 2015 Nandipha was featured in Destiny Magazine, a monthly high-end business, lifestyle and fashion publication for women. The piece was titled “Nandipha Sekeleni – A doctor breaking fashion borders” which is an appropriate title fit for the fashionista doctor. In the same year, Forbes Africa also featured her in an article appreciating her sense of style. Since then, Dr Sekeleni has been featured in numerous media such as the Mail and Guardian Top 200 young South Africans, radio shows and the likes. She continues to make a name for herself, building a powerful brand that inspires many ladies both locally and abroad.
When Dr Sekeleni isn’t sharing her fashion looks, she’s passionately advocating for a healthy lifestyle and glowing skin. She’s the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Optimum Medical Aesthetic, a skin care and aesthetic clinic providing non-surgical treatments which recently moved to Sandton, Johannesburg.
Apart from medical aesthetics, Nandipha is also very passionate about bringing much-needed change within the public healthcare system in South Africa.
She cares deeply for others which is evident in the way she speaks affectionately about her family. She is a devout wife and loving mother of two. A phrase that stood out for me on her Instagram bio was “Raising queens”. It is evident in all of her content that her family is second to none. This only goes to show that a woman can be an exceptional wife, mother and professional without dropping the ball on anything. Women should not have to sacrifice a successful career in order to be a good mother and wife. The contrary holds true as well. Nandipha is proof that it can be done, with style and grace might I add.
Dr Nandipha is one of the many women in healthcare who are trailblazers in their own right. We celebrate and honor all women bringing a positive change in the healthcare space.
